sweet dreams + a recipe

My girl has some trouble getting to sleep sometimes. Intrusive thoughts, fears of bad that time I sort of told her about Wendigos...and she had nightmares for weeks. Mother of the year, right here. We got over Wendigos eventually, but new fears always come (this time, they weren't my fault!) In tears, she explained me her that heart was hurting every night, and her solution was to have me snuggle her until she fell asleep.

Wow, hardship. As she's getting older, I'm becoming aware that our days of snuggling are somewhat numbered, and I am going to take full advantage while they last!

The problem was that lying in a dark room with a sweet little arm draped over me meant that I was falling asleep at 8:00 every night. This was perhaps not great.

And so, one day while she was over baking banana cookies with her grandmother (they were shockingly delicious), I made her a gentle, sweet dreams balm. We rub it on her heart every night, to keep the pain away. And since then, after a brief snuggle, I tear myself away and she falls asleep, dreaming of flying donuts and sheep-riding fairies.

Sweet Dreams Balm Recipe:

  • 1/4 cup olive oil (I used an herbal oil we made using a sweetgrass that grows nearby, by plain oil will do)
  • 1/4 oz beeswax, grated
  • 15 drops lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops sweet orange essential oil
  • Small jar

Heat the oil over low heat until you can feel the heat rising. Add the beeswax and stir until it has melted. Remove from the heat and pour the mixture into your jar. Add your essential oils and stir. Cover and let it set for 2 hours.
